Should I do grey in the kitchen??

Okay so I love this kitchen!!  I love the white counters and the grey cabinets with big silver handles, the lanterns, the farmhouse sink and the tile detailing by the cooktop!
What would you do?  Would you commit to a style like this in such a permanent room?

Maybe white on most cabinets and grey on the island?

would tire of this quickly; perhaps a lighter shade on the cabinets or a glaze to tone down would help. agree w/last thought, to use this deeper color on smaller island. The dark grey on upper cabinets seem a bit too opaque to me.

I love that colour its very elegant, everyones plays it safe, I say take the plunge it will look amazing. But if you feel un easy with such a brave decision then yeah just go for grey on the island & dependant on whether you are going for a free standing cooker or a sperate oven & hob you could make a feature of the grey under the hob with pan drawers. Im quite sure you have it all figured out in your head already though you have great taste. Have a good weekend :)

I don't think you could go wrong either way...if you are even 10% unsure...(its too big of an investment to have ANY doubt) then how about creamy white cabinets with they gray island? I love love love it..but I thnk you have to be totally commited to it. Look forward to hearing what you decide!

That particular grey does not appeal, it is too dense. Might work with a lot of white. Did like the grey and white tile backsplash...helps break up the solid grey.

What would I do? I already did it! We sent out our cabinet door/drawer fronts and had them painted a lighter gray semigloss enamel, did the arctic white countertop, wood floors, black baseboards, black oval table [w/ two tiers below] as a center "island," pair of stainless countertop lamps w/ black shades, stainless drawer/door pulls, viking appliances, we absolutely adore it. It's been like this 2 years now, and our love for the gray/white/black combo just grows and grows.

While the style of cabinetry chosen above is not me at all, I LOVE the color! I grew up - partly - in a farmhouse with dove gray cabinets, and a checkerboard floor.... I remember it fondly :)

I'm also voting in the "yes" camp. :-) That kitchen is gorgeous and you're devoted to all things grey. I say go for it! Maybe try a different grey though? Say a brown or lavender grey (a little warmer looking) instead of the blue grey above? I'd say green gray... but I'm not a fan. Can't wait to see your results. :-)

I love it and would only be sure to have colorful art or splashes of bright color here and there .. nothing worse than a dreary grey kitchen in winter !

I love the grey - just not sure about it with those floors...I also love the lantern and the backsplash - gorgeous! I also like a compromise though of a more neutral cupboard color and then go bolder with the island...I'm going to consider that one for my own kitchen design!

Go for it! You obviously LOVE grey so just do it! ;-) LOL We painted our cabinets BLACK and our island is a beautiful grey called french silver, I LOVE it. As much as I love the black cabinets, I think I would have loved grey just as much! If you want to see mine they are on my blog on the right where the favorite posts are. I can't wait to see what you decide!

Love it!! I have a gray green on my cabinets, and have loved them for years, and get compliments all the time. I do though, love the thought of a 2 toned kitchen. My house is old and it is easy to repaint cabinets. If you are really unsure, get some old white paper, wrapping or whatever, and paint it the gray you are thinking of and hang on cabinets, using a large paper will give you a chance to sample on a large surface. Go for it. Love your blog.

I love the color grey but not to sure about that color for cabinets. I like the idea of creamy white cabinets and the island in a light to medium shade of grey.

Yes! I'm about to paint my outdated cabinets this exact colour. Their boring whiteness is in dire need of some depth and personality!

We are in the process of renovating a house and our cabinets will be Sherwin williams gauntlet gray and our island will be creamy white. I LCD the look and think you should go for it! If you ever get bored... It's just paint!

I love the grey island idea. do you know what color this grey is? it is fabulous.

Iris said...

Mmmm, I am not sure; the grey color is nice, but together with these kind of cabinets, the dark wood and the sand floor it looks a bit busy. Perhaps it would work better with a lighter floor and smooth cabinets?

i actually love this color. It is so relaxing, but definitely do not go any lighter.

I love anything grey... it's so timeless! But I have to say it depends on the size of the room, if it's too small it might not work as well as the white cabinets and the grey island, it will totally pop and ground the room. If the room is the same size as the above image... go for it girl! You're the most talented designer I have seen... you can't go wrong with your vision!!!

I think the average person with the average small space could not pull this off. I think you'd need a large and bright space to make it work. I love, love, love seeing something other than white. Enough already with the all white kitchen! I would love this even more if the uppers were white, the backsplash was Carrera marble subway tile and the floors were wood. Great picture, fun post. xoxo

I REALLY want to know what color name this is! It's stunning.

I agree with Donna from "A Perfect Gray". Of course, silly girl. Actually "gutsy girl" is better! NEVER COP OUT! Never, never, never cop out. You never regret the bold, intuitive decisions. Second guessing yourself is a total waste of time...It doesn't matter who of your readers do or do not have enough confidence to do this, or whether they are "comfortable" or would "like it in their own home". We're talking Christina here! Go for it, and we will all follow in awe, (as we usually do...)

Thank you for all of your wonderful comments!!! It is such a hard thing because it seems so permanent...

I have done a high gloss grey kitchen, which was really successful. Just remember the balance in the room and your light sources - natural & artificial.

I've been toying with a black kitchen for a client......

I love this kitchen too but I think the colour is reliant on both the crisp white bench tops & sink, as well as the natural light.
Am not too fond of the heavy 'kitchen island' with the dark wood top though. I'd go with something a little lighter and more elegant.
The floor although nice may work better with a more rustic kitchen. I'd opt for limed wooden floors - but that's the Swede in me talking.. :)

The sink and tap are heaven. Just the right kind of 'elegance' and I love how these sleeker lines works with the edgier studs in the chair and also the stove hood.

So my verdict is 'do it' - grey/white is a timeless combination that you'll love for years to come. Also it's easy to dress this neutral base in so many ways, just in case you want to mix it up later on.

Best of luck!

xx Charlotta

My daughter did a gray kitchen in her new home with concrete countertops stained dark brown, it looks great. She also did a stacked stone backsplash. I would do it.

If you love it, go for it! It's a gorgeous kitchen. It may look dated more quickly than white or cream and kitchen cabinets are so expensive to replace . . . BUT life is too short to play it safe.

Splendid Willow said...

Yes!!!! And I will follow! I know (we all know!) that you have excuisite taste. My dream have always been to have a gray kitchen. I would go a couple of shades lighter, though. But I tend to always play it safe!

I realize this is an older post & maybe you've already more than decided this. But I say go for it! Especially, if it's true love & you'll be there a while. We're currently readying our house for sale. I couldn't commit to all grey for sell-ability, however I did inject some due to the popularity of it these days & it's classic appeal as a neutral. The plan is antiqued silver ceiling tile back splash, luminous white for the upper cabinets (we have white appliances), a pale luminous grey for lowers (still feels light, airy & clean, but adds a subtle contrast, a deeper (mid-toned) grey for walls (very little wall space in this kitchen) also on the island, slate vinyl flooring... delish.
